How to Make Cinnamon Ornaments
A few years ago PPP reader Kristi sent me this simple recipe to make Cinnamon Ornaments, and I wanted to share it again with you because it is so fun to make!
They're so simple to make (it took me under 15 minutes from start to finish), and look and smell just wonderful. They would be so cute added as a gift tag to a special gift, or a great way to let your kids inexpensively decorate the tree this year!
How do I make Cinnamon Ornaments?
Cinnamon ornaments are very easy to make and only take a few ingredients. Feel free to use whatever cookie cutters you have on hand to make them personalized to your home.
Ingredients for Cinnamon Ornaments:
- cinnamon
- applesauce
- glue (regular school glue is fine)
Mix together the cinnamon and applesauce until it holds a consistency of cookie dough (you'll use 1 cup of cinnamon, and 3/4 cup of applesauce). If it seems dry, feel free to add more applesauce; too wet, and add more cinnamon.
Next, add in your school glue to the mixture and combine. Sprinkle cinnamon on your counters as you would flour for cookies, then roll out your dough with a rolling pin. You'll want the dough to be thick, but not so thick that you're unable to work with it.
Cut out your shapes using cookie cutters – and if you want a ribbon or ornament hanger, you can use a straw to poke a hole in the top so you can hang your ornaments on your tree.
Place the cinnamon ornaments on a cooling rack and let them dry for about 48 hours. You can either paint them or leave them plain. Enjoy!

Cinnamon Ornaments
Ingredients
- 1 Cup Cinnamon
- 3/4 Cup Applesauce
- 2 Tbsp Regular School Glue
Instructions
Mix ingredients together until it's the consistency of a cookie dough. (If it seems too dry, add a bit more applesauce; if too wet, add more cinnamon)
Mix in your school glue. I like to sprinkle cinnamon on my counters like I would flour, and then roll out with a rolling pin.
You'll want your dough to be thick - but not too thick that it is unable to be worked with.
Cut out your shapes with your favorite cookie cutter. (We like to use Gingerbread men!). You can also make a small hole at the top - that way you can run a ribbon or ornament hanger through to hang on your tree.
Place on a cooking rack and dry about 48 hours. You can then either paint them or leave them plain. If you have a food dehydrator, you can use that as well (simply cook for about 8 hours).
How long do Cinnamon Ornaments last?
These homemade ornaments can last years if you take care of them carefully. I've actually heard of people having them after 35 years and still have the smell of cinnamon! To help care for these each year, once you are ready to store them, place carefully in tissue paper, wrap gently, and place into a storage bag that can be tightly sealed.

Hmm, maybe around 130°-140° in the food dehydrator Nancy (for 4-8 hours or until completely dry) ~ hope that helps!

Hi Becky! It will vary depending on how thick you make them, and what cookie cutters you use, but a batch should make roughly 10 – 12 standard-size ornaments! Hope that helps!

Do these have to be thrown away after Christmas?? Is there something other than applesauce that would help them last??

Hi Deb! Some people have said they’ve kept them for years, but it probably depends on how you store them! 🙂 You could also make them out of polymer clay as well, if you’d like them to last a good while (just bake the clay in the oven once shaped)! Hope that helps!

Used to love making these with my boys when they were young. We would trace their hand every year and compare how much their hands had grown in a year when we hung the ornaments on our tree! Such great memories!
